Zakiya Courtney Milwaukee, Wisconsin

Zakiya Courtney leads a grassroots group of parents organized to advocate on behalf of superior quality educational choices. As director of Parents for School Choice, she has served as the primary organizer, spokesperson, media contact and lobbyist for a diverse coalition of parents, organizations, and businesses interested in advancing educational issues. She has also served as the chairperson (1990-1994) for the Pupil Assignment Council, mandated by state law for schools participating in the Milwaukee Parental School Choice Program.

Mrs. Courtney’s full time responsibilities are at the Institute for the Transformation of Learning at Marquette University. Under the leadership of Dr. Robert Pavlik, Zakiya serves as the assistant director of the School Design & Development Center. Here she continues to provide professional development opportunities and technical assistance to new and start up schools.
