The Black Alliance for Educational Options (BAEO) is a national organization whose mission is to actively support parental choice to empower families and increase quality educational options for Black children.
Philadelphia is one of 15 cities to officially form a local chapter of BAEO, and is currently the second-largest BAEO chapter with 530 members consisting of parents, educators, school administrators, legislators, members of religious and educational organizations, and community leaders.

School choice is widespread in America - unless you are poor. Affluent families have choice because they can move to different neighborhoods or communities, send their children to private schools or supplement schooling with tutors and enrichment programs. Lower-income and working-class families, meanwhile, are typically trapped with one option - a school in need of improvement.

BAEO is committed to expanding the educational options available to all families - regardless of income - but our focus is on helping low income and working class black families.

Dozens of reports and studies have been issued recently highlighting the plight of Black children in Americas schools. In Philadelphia in particular, the facts are grim. Philadelphias Black children continue to lag behind whites in all indicators of academic achievement. Low-income and working-class minority Philadelphia parents have less access than middle- and upper-income parents to high quality teachers and schools, and are less satisfied with schools available for their children.

Expanding low-income and working-class parents knowledge about their right to be involved in and choose the best education for their children is critical to reversing the educational plight facing Black children. Philadelphia BAEO is the voice and resource for Black Philadelphia parents seeking the opportunity to improve their childrens educational options and academic potential.

Philadelphia BAEO also serves as an advocate for increasing educational options and expanding school choice in Philadelphia. The staff, Board, and members of Philadelphia BAEO include some of the leading advocates for school choice in our region.
