This is truly a historic moment. I never thought in my life time that I would see a Black man elected President of the United States.
I must admit, however, that my recognition of this monumental achievement is tempered by the reality of its impact on the movement that all of you have given your hearts and souls to over the past 10 years.
The Democrats have not been a party that supports all of the options we want for our parents and their children. We have been working to change that with efforts like our upcoming Seminar for Black elected Officials, but it remains to be seen if that work will bear fruit for our movement.
The Democrats now control the all Senate, The Assembly and the Governor in Wisconsin. That puts the Milwaukee Parental Choice Program and the Independent Charter Program in jeopardy. I do not know all the results in Ohio, but I am assuming there is real trouble there as well. It could be a very bad thing for the Opportunity Scholarship Program in DC.
So, I am happy for our people but I know that one Black man going into the White House does not mean LIBERATION for our people. It is a very SIGNIFICANT step , but I know the struggle goes on!!!
I hope you will join with me in congratulating President -Elect Obama while we thank all of the fighters who came before him that made his win possible. He will need our prayers and our support. But, in truth we must be prepared to fight on, because the cause for which we came together still needs us. Now more than ever!!!
The Struggle Continues,
