MILWAUKEE - The Milwaukee Chapter of the Black Alliance for Educational Options demonstrated outside Wisconsin Gov. Jim Doyles fundraiser in September to encourage the governor to support legislation to eliminate the enrollment cap on the Milwaukee Parental Choice Program.
Last year Gov. Doyle twice vetoed legislation to eliminate the enrolment cap, which limits parental school choice enrollment to about 14,8000 students. It is likely the cap will be reached next year, as there are approximately 14,000 low-income students currently participating in the program.
"The enrollment cap will hurt schools and families," noted Dr. Howard Fuller, National Board Chair of BAEO. "Only one person needs to be convinced to lift the cap. That is Gov. Jim Doyle."
Gov. Doyle acknowledged the 70 demonstrators, but did not speak to them before entering the fundraiser.
