Allow parents to choose schools

Choosing a child’s school is one of the most important decisions a family can make. The implications are lifelong. Six years ago, my son was accepted into the La Crosse School District as an out-of-district student.

This decision was made on numerous factors, including the fact that the nearest La Crosse high school was seven miles from our home, and the high school he would normally attend was about 22 miles away. This allowed us to transport him to school in the morning and saved him a two-hour bus ride daily. It also allowed us to be very active in his daily school activities.

We are grateful to the state and the La Crosse School District, which provided this opportunity to us. During the years my son has attended La Crosse schools, we have been impressed with the high level of education provided at all schools.

Zach Stewart’s letter of April 3 is an insult to all of the professional and dedicated teachers employed in La Crosse. To state that Central teachers want upper-class students is completely untrue. Central teachers, as all teachers in the district, have the best interest of students at heart. The state of Wisconsin has established “school choice” for all residents.

School choice means that each family should be able to choose for themselves what school is the best choice for their child. We are tax paying citizens. Our tax dollars go to support public schools. Parents are the best decision makers for their children. Shouldn’t parents decide what public school their child attends?
