KENNETH CAMPBELL SELECTED NEW BAEO PRESIDENT

Washington, D.C. – The Black Alliance for Educational Options (BAEO) announced today that the organization has selected Kenneth Campbell, a founding board member and current Director of Charter Schools for the Louisiana Department of Education as its new President. He will begin his new role in early April.

Campbell has worked with the Louisiana Department of Education since 2007, where he has helped to create an environment where charter schools can grow and thrive and ultimately become a strong educational option for Louisiana’s students and families.

“I am honored to serve our members and allies in the parental choice movement in this new role,” said Mr. Campbell. “There’s a lot of work to be done in the coming years to ensure that high quality educational options for Black children are available in every city and state in the nation.”

Campbell, a strong advocate for high quality educational options for Black children has worked to support the creation of high quality charter schools for more than 15 years. He played a key role in helping to establish a strong charter school movement in Washington, D.C. during the 1990s. He was part of the initial effort that worked to get one of the country’s best charter school laws passed for the District. He also created the D.C. Charter School Resource Center to ensure there was an environment in DC where charter schools could be successful and to teach people how to start new charter schools.

“Ken’s leadership, experience and commitment to high quality options for Black children make him the right person to lead BAEO,” said Kevin P. Chavous, Chair-elect of the BAEO Board.  “He’s committed to our mission, understands the urgency, and he has the courage to stand up for what is right for our children.”

During the 1990’s and early 2000’s, Campbell helped to establish public charter schools in urban areas across the country, working with Mosaica Education, Inc. Prior to his position with the Louisiana Department of Education, he spent almost four year years in Doha, Qatar, where he helped the country’s leadership in its efforts to convert its existing public schools into charter schools, as part of the most progressive school reform effort ever attempted in the Middle East.

Mr. Campbell also served in the U.S. Army and retired as a Captain from the U.S. Army Reserve in 2005.  He earned a Bachelor's Degree in Business Administration from Averett College in Va., and a Masters Degree in Educational Leadership from Touro University International.  He and his wife, Shelia, currently reside near Baton Rouge, La., with their son.

BAEO is a national, non-profit, membership organization with members nationwide. BAEO was founded in 2000, by Howard Fuller, Deborah McGriff, Virginia Walden-Ford, Philadelphia State Rep. Dwight Evans, Newark Mayor Cory Booker, and several other prominent Black educators, elected officials and civil rights activists with start-up funding from the Walton family foundation. BAEO will celebrate its 10th anniversary at Symposium 2010, the Annual Meeting of the organization in Milwaukee, Wis., on March 4-6.

BAEO’s mission is to increase access to high-quality educational options for Black children by actively supporting parental choice policies and programs that empower low-income and working-class Black families. For more information on BAEO visit www.baeo.org.
